MELKITE THEOLOGY IN LATE EIGHTH CENTURY ARABIC. THE FORM OF ORTHODOXY IN THE CREED
OF THEODORE ABU QURRAH (755-830)

Abstract: An analytical study entitled Melkite Arab Theology in Late 8th Century ( The Shape of
Orthodoxy in Theodore Abū Qurrah‘s Creed, 755-830) is based on a detailed analysis of the key text of
the Confession of faith (ar. Amānah al-urthūdhuksīya) from the pen of the Melkite bishop of Harran,
Theodore Abū Qurrah. A deeper analysis of this text, even in world languages, is still lacking. The
study begins with an introduction to the Melkite Church and the life of Abū Qurrah. Subsequently,
the text of the Confession of faith itself is presented in more detail. The very personal character of
the whole text is traced, as well as some topics: the Christian trinity, Trinitarian heresiography, the
mystery of the Incarnation, and Christological heresiography. Theodore wrote a short Confession
of faith, which can be called a small theological summa. It is written very poetically. In content,
the Confession of faith is in complete harmony with the key councils of Christian antiquity. The
Confession not only shows the mature Christian theology of Theodore Abū Qurrah, and hence of
the Melkite tradition of the time, but above all it points to a unique interpretation of orthodoxy in
the Arabic language. Theodore proves in his Confession that the orthodoxy of the Melkite Church
of the late eighth and early ninth centuries lived in deep harmony with all the ancient councils of
Christianity. It is not just a repetition of the same thing, but a deeper form of interpretation.

GREEK CATENAE FRAGMENTS AS UNTRUSTWORTHY SOURCES OF ORIGEN’S THOUGHT

Abstract: Origen is one of the most prolific writers of antiquity. However, only fractional parts of
Origen’s literary corpus are preserved through direct tradition. Most scholars, therefore, resort to
texts belonging to the indirect tradition of Origen’s corpus, including Greek fragments preserved
in the collections of exegetical passages called “catenae.” Although the catena manuscripts
contain many textual units bearing Origen’s name, the paper argues that catena fragments are not
trustworthy sources of Origen’s thought, and their textual testimony has to be verified by other
texts independent of the “catenae” tradition.

Keywords: Origen; catenae; fragments; patristic exegesis; early Christianity

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY: ITS SACRAMENTAL AND PASTORAL CHARACTER AND SOME RELATED
CONTEMPORARY ISSUES

Abstract: The main theme of this paper is pastoral ministry in its theological and practical
understanding and in terms of some contemporary issues. Traditionally, pastoral ministry has
been dealt with by pastoral theology, which has its origins in the Roman Catholic Church. In the
Czechoslovak Hussite Church, the pastoral ministry was reflected in particular by Otto Rutrle
and Milan Salajka. The clerical vocation is linked to the Church—its organism and mission. From
the history of the priesthood, attention is paid to the writings and opinions of John Chrysostom,
Jan Hus, and Lukáš of Prague. The characteristics of the priestly ministry and its tasks in the
Czechoslovak Hussite Church are determined by theology and orders. The weight of the
priesthood rests upon its liturgical and sacramental role. In the current discussion, three models
emerge: the renewal of territorial pastoral care, the creation of spiritual centres, or a chaplaincy
ministry that is open to all. The shape of pastoral ministry in the future is closely related to the
development and transformation of the churches in society in a particular time and situation.

CHARACTER TRAITS OF HETEROSEXUAL WOMEN PRACTICING ALTERNATIVE FAITHS

Abstract: The article deals with a psychological analysis of character traits in heterosexual
women practicing the occult. The aim of the research is to identify certain personality traits of
heterosexual women and to compare them with a control group of respondents. The author uses
the psychological character questionnaire Accent of Personality of Leonhard and Shmishek for the
research. There are 58 respondents with Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian female nationality in
the sample. The average age of the participants is 27.5 years. Quantitative research takes place in
the years 2021-2022 and is carried out by electronic data collection via Google Forms. From the
statistical results, the author concludes that there is a significant difference between the levels of
hyperthymia, dysthymia and demonstrativeness in the two sample of participants. The results of
current research may be useful for clinical psychologists targeting clients with increased anxiety,
dysthymia, hypertension, exaltation, and other character traits. The results can also be used by
the staff of the centers when working with adolescents who are interested in the occult but do
not profess any religion. Psychologists can use the results obtained in psychological training or
psychodrama to normalize the emotional behavior of participants.

THE IDENTITY AND FUTURE OF THE CZECHOSLOVAK HUSSITE CHURCH: A SOCIOLOGICAL SURVEY

Abstract: Historical and sociological research on the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, conducted on
its centenary, revealed dramatic decline and a number of internal problems of this community.
This led the author to a qualitative sociological research among pastors and bishops about recent
troubles, identity and future direction of their church. The research showed a significant divergence
of dioceses, with a rather traditionalist, inward-looking representatives preferring (modern) Hussite
identity on one side, and broader spectrum of their critics striving for more open, “generally Christian”
attitudes on the other. At the same time, the opinions and actions of the actors are related to their
origins and experiences. Although the alternative stream seems to be wider now, it is not unified
and so far losses (including the election of the patriarch in 2021). However, further development can
be expected in the near future, while the decline of church members will presumably continue alike.

THE IMPACT OF THE CHOLERA EPIDEMIC IN 1831 ON THE PARISHES OF THE BISHOPRIC OF SPIŠ
(BASED ON DUPLICATE REGISTRIES)

Abstract: The Bishop‘s Archive in the Spišská Kapitula in Spišské Podhradie preserves one of the most
important sources for researching about the past. It is a duplicate of registries from the territory of
the entire Spiš diocese (Spiš, Liptov and Orava region). These duplicates are written from 1788 to
the present (annually these duplicates are made and kept in the Bishops‘ Archive). One part of
this department are also duplicates of the registry of the deceased from 1831, which bring us very
important informations from the year of the spread of cholera in the Spiš diocese. The presented
study provides informations on the incidence of cholera in selected parishes and also provides
information on the number of deaths from the disease and comparation with another years.

ASTRONOMY AT A CROSSROADS WITH RELIGION AND POLITICS IN RENAISSANCE PRAGUE – THE
GOLDEN ERA BEFORE THE THIRTY-YEARS WAR

Abstract: This article gives an overview of Renaissance Prague as a meeting place of proto-science,
namely astronomy in its religious and political context of pre-Thirty-Years-War times, during the rule
of emperor Rudolf II, a famous Maecenas of arts, science and all things occult. After introductory
notes and short sketches of Rudolf II, the development of heliocentric theory and a set of short
medallions of astronomers connected to Prague are given. Johannes Kepler, a discoverer of planetary
motion laws, gets more attention in a separate chapter. The epilogue summarises key findings of
what is today called Lutheran astronomy vs. Jesuit astronomy of the 17th century. Method used:
research of primary and secondary literary sources related to astronomy, religion and politics of the
17th century Prague and kingdom of Bohemia.

THE LIFE AND WORKS OF SZYMON BUDNY

Abstract: The main subject of this thesis is the sixteenth century person of Szymon Budny, Polish
translator, theologian and member of the nontrinitarian Ecclesia Minor. The goal of the thesis is to
present the life story, literary works, and biblical translations of this relatively unknown character
living in the tumultuous period in the Polish and Lithuanian history. A significant portion of the
research is dedicated to the evolution and progress of the subject’s religious beliefs as shown on his
major publications that include theological treatises as well as translations of the Bible. The conflicts
and division inside the Ecclesia Minor on the subject of Christian’s obligations towards the State,
whether it is acceptable to serve in the government or the opinions about death penalty or use of
violence are also put under an evaluation and explained in relation to his overall thought.
