THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF THE BOND BETWEEN THEOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK

Abstract: The present contribution reflects the misconceptions related to the connection between
theology and social work. It deals shortly with the requirements placed on social workers in the
thoughts of František Maria Hník, theologian and bishop of the Czechoslovak Church, on the
grounds of the reflection of a period testimony on the first international conference on social work
held in Paris in 1928. The paper observes the basic aspect of the connection between theology
and social work which lies in the concept of helping others. It shows a new way of thinking in
practical theology which serves as a foundation for defining the so-called theology of social work. It
also shows the benefits of the connection between the two fields for social workers in the form of
a competence for decoding the reality and sensitization towards understanding practical situations
as well as understanding the higher purpose of helping others.

ANTISEMITISM IN HABRY 1900 – 1942

Abstract: This paper deals with Antisemitism in Habry during two different periods. The first begins
in the year 1900 and ends with the German occupation. This is followed by the second part, ending
in 1942, when the Jews from Habry were murdered. The work is based primarily on an analysis of
Antisemitism from unpublished archival materials and the texts of the lost chronicle of Habry. The
analysis is based on important historical documents of unique value due to the fact that they have
been lost. The hostile attitudes also spread by newspaper articles, which played a role in shaping the
view of Jews from Habry, were in many aspects consistent with the later Nazi occupation. However,
there are differences between Czech Antisemitism in the 20th century and the Nazi occupation.
The Nazis were primarily interested in the annihilation of the Jews. The aim of this research is to
point out Antisemitism in Czech history to enable the self-reflection of Czech society by looking
into their historical manifestations, to deepen its responsibility, and to restore confidence in its
own contemporary humanitarian values through the necessary actions, taking into account the still
unrepaired historical damage.

RESTRICTIONS AGAINST EVANGELICAL PASTORS DURING THE SO-CALLED TEN YEARS OF
PERSECUTION OF PROTESTANTS

Abstract: The period from 1671 to 1681 is usually referred to by church historians as the ten-year
persecution of Protestants. Not only this decade, but also almost the entire second half of the
17th century was closely associated with the government of Leopold I and his re-Catholicization
measures, which included a number of restrictions, due to which Protestants in Hungary were
persecuted. Many measures concerned evangelical pastors, who were often expelled from their
parishes, persecuted for no reason, tried and even imprisoned, or sent to the galleys. Evangelical
parish priests found themselves in a difficult situation, whose lives began to change significantly
precisely under the pressure of ever-increasing re-Catholicization measures. The situation became
most markedly aggravated in some church congregations precisely during the ten-year persecution
of evangelicals. Several evangelical pastors were forced to leave their parishes, hand over their
churches to the Catholics and flee. Some managed to fulfill their duties despite the re-Catholization
pressures, others were not so lucky and were expelled from their churches and parishes. At the
beginning of the 1770, churches were taken from the Evangelicals, along with all church buildings
and property, and Protestant priests and teachers were subsequently removed. Some of them
emigrated voluntarily, some were forced to emigrate. Priests and rectors who refused to emigrate or
convert were condemned and sent to the galleys. As an official form of restrictions, representatives
of the Catholic Church, with the support of the monarch, used the courts, to which they summoned
Protestant preachers. Such an extraordinary court was held in Prešpork in 1673, to which Archbishop
Juraj Szelepcsényi summoned 33 evangelical and two reformed priests.

CONFESSION AND ECCLESIASTICAL LAW. AN OVERVIEW OF PENITENTIAL CANONS IN THE CZECH
LANDS IN THE HIGH AND LATE MIDDLE AGES

PDF

Abstract: In the study, the author focuses on penitential canons in the Czech lands in the High and
Late Middle Ages. Significant collections of ecclesiastical law and the provisions of conciliar decrees
and papal codes ascribed a legal dimension to confession and made it a legal institute. Older
provisions on confession and penance were summarised by the monk Gratian in his Decretum,
and the Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215 provided the impetus for regular annual confession.
Regulations on confession are incorporated into provincial and diocesan statutes, in that the texts of
these statutes were to be procured by each parish priest in order for him to learn what obligations
had been put in place in connection with confession. In practice, parish priests could use various
manuals to help them in confession or in the administration of pastoral care of the inhabitants
of their parish. Almost sixty confessional manuals are preserved in Czech libraries. An important
role was played by Summa de casibus poenitentiae by Raymond of Peñafort and Summa Pisana
by Bartholomaeus de Sancto Concordia. Domestic authors of penitential and pastoral manuals
included Robert, Bishop of Olomouc, Hermann of Prague, Štěpán of Roudnice, Sander Rambow,
Mattheus of Cracow, Štěpán of Kolín, and Václav of Dráchov.

THE THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT OF JAN AMOS COMENIUS AND HIS DEVELOPMENT OF UNIVERSAL
ORDER

PDF

Abstract: Jan Amos Comenius’s monumental work De rerum humanarum emendatione consultatio
catholica is of particular importance for the study of his theological thought. The section on the
spiritual world in the Pansofia acts as a comprehensive theological treatise that contains its own
internal structure. Here Comenius emphasizes and clarifies successively important religious,
spiritual and practical-theological themes. Against the background of Comenius‘ concept of
universal redemption is the biblical history of salvation. Central to this history is Jesus Christ, whom
Comenius refers to as the „Repairer.“ In Comenius‘s theological thought there is an obvious effort
to harmonize the contradictions of confessional disputes. Comenius‘s biblically oriented hope and
eschatological outlook is a legacy of the Bohemian Reformation.

THE APPLICATION OF SOCIAL MEMORY THEORY IN BIBLICAL STUDIES: ITS SHAPES AND TRENDS

Abstract: This study introduces a specific view of approaching the social memory theory applications
to New Testament topics. This view sees the application on different levels of texts: the microscopic
level, the mesoscopic level, and the macroscopic level. This approach is also used for a comparison
of articles from collective monographs on the social memory theory application. Based on this
comparison, conclusions about the trends used at different levels is made.

ECCLESIOLOGICAL MODELS OF THE FUTURE

Abstract: This paper responds to the current debate about future models of the church and their
potential for reform. It first attempts to demonstrate through a historical examination the specific
role that models of the church play in shaping spiritual life, from what impulses they emerge, and
how they work with reform ideas. Two examples are presented in the next sequence to suggest
possible functional models of the church that have been developed under contemporary pressures
of secularization. The paper concludes with selected questions that the church may ask in the
context of discussing future models, pointing out the limits of the presented models and the
possible outcomes of such a dialogue.

PASTORAL SERVICE: A PART OF THE DIVINE MISSION

Abstract: The basic premise of this study is the missiological position that the mission of the church
is the work of the triune God. The church with its programs is an instrument of God‘s action in the
world. In doing so, pastoral ministry is one of the most important expressions of missional ministry,
since its personal quality permeates and integrates many ministries within the community of the
church as well as those that are directed to God‘s beloved world of people. The actual research
aim of this study is to explore and present how pastoral ministry becomes a personally addressing
and contextually active instrument of God‘s mission. The study draws on missiological positions
and pastoral-theological principles, but seeks to suggest concrete ways of implementing pastoral
ministry alongside people in a variety of situations. The study leads to the observation that pastoral
ministry calls for a differentiated approach to the human person in a variety of situations. The need
for a differentiated approach in terms of the content and form of ministry is presented in the study
by a few selected examples.

RABBI MOSHE HAYIM LUZZATTO: THE WAY OF THE LORD – CHAPTER TWO – PURPOSE OF CREATION

Abstract:

This article is another part of the series focused on the life and works of one of the
greatest Jewish thinkers, Rabbi Moshe Hayim Luzzatto (1707—1746; also known as RaMHaL). This
part brings the translation of Chapter Two (focused on God‘s perfection, the purpose of creation
and the human‘s task in creation) from Luzzatto’s religious philosophical treatise Derekh Ha-Shem
(i.e. The Way of The Lord; usually translated as: The Way of God). The author of the translation tries
to clarify RaMHaL’s way of thinking (via the commentary as well as system of comprehensive and
detailed footnotes which take into account the religious, philosophic and historic context of Rabbi
Moshe Hayim Luzzatto‘s specific approach).
